Architecture is one of the crowning glories of Azerbaijani culture. The country's countless architectural treasures begin for many with the Maiden Tower in Baku, believed to have originated in the 12th century C.E., which in itself demonstrates the presence of Zoroastrians, Sassanians, Arabs, Persians, Shirvanis, Ottomans, and Russians. Yet many more regionally and historically distinctive examples of Azerbaijani architecture exist throughout the country.
