2010 was an amazing year for spreading the foundation’s mission of fostering an understanding of the culture, arts, and heritage of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. Some of the year’s achievements include the following:
- cultural evening introducing Washington, D.C., audiences to the vast musical accomplishments of Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov (1885-1948), first Muslim opera composer and innovator of a powerful musical legacy synthesizing East and West
- photo exhibits focusing on the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and illuminating this historic cradle of culture
- launch of the weekly Azerbaijani Radio Hour: The Voice of the Karabakh Foundation, the only program of its kind in North America, reaching millions of listeners and fans via radio interviews and musical programs
- institution of the Azerbaijani Documentary Project, which to date has secured dozens of interviews with individuals connected with Azerbaijan and also has generated the basis of the Foundation’s archive
- accession of an Azerbaijani coin collection donated by a major collector and beginnings of an online exhibition supported by a grant from the Center for Digital Imaging Arts-Boston University at Georgetown University
- receipt of a major grant from the Allaverdy Foundation to build on the Foundation’s cultural programming
- agreement with the Smithsonian Institution Freer/Sackler Gallery to cosponsor a pan-Caucasus concert
- presentation of film by Azerbaijan’s leading female film director, Mehriban Alekperzade, with panel discussion by Ms. Alekperzade, at a private theater in Washington, D.C., and on the campus of George Mason University
- cooperation with a new Azerbaijani Student Union at George Mason University in Virginia
- evolution of a comprehensive Web site www.KarabakhFoundation.org providing “one-stop shopping” information about Azerbaijan and the Caucasus
- publication of articles related to Azerbaijan
- cultivation of a multifaceted community, including an online community, dedicated to
1) sharing the extraordinary cultural heritage of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus and
2) building bridges of understanding to serve future generations

- programs expanding common notions of “Oriental rugs” to incorporate Azerbaijan’s extensive contributions in textile arts
- fostering of an artistic community that allows Azerbaijan and the Caucasus to become part of the American cultural consciousness
- interethnic dialogues
- collecting of more artifacts related to Azerbaijan and the Caucasus
- publication of the first Azerbaijani “cultural cookbook” demonstrating menus and cooking traditions within a cultural context
- social opportunities to foster multicultural understanding
- art exhibitions expanding the cultural landscape
- documentary films focusing on current issues in the Caucasus
- donations of archival materials to the U.S. Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution (National Museum), and other institutions
- recordings of Azerbaijani music from the traditional to the contemporary
- creation of an Azerbaijani stamp virtual exhibition to serve as a timeline of Azerbaijan’s complex and fascinating history
- chess programs to highlight the significance of chess in Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani contributions to the game
- lectures at universities by visiting experts
